Latest Updates from Our Project:

Crew Miniatures, Transport Upper Cockpit - only one last stretch goal left
almost 5 years ago – Mon, Jul 01, 2019 at 06:25:22 PM

Update: This post was meant to go out on Friday, but I received some sad news and had to attend to family matters.

Let's look at what we have this week!

I honestly thought after the hassle of the space suits last time around, that this would be a real pain the backside to convert these meshes from the zbrush model (which is not solid) to something printable. Thankfully, meshmixer was a massive help, and the process went very quickly!

These bad boys were quicker to implement than I thought... but... the scale might be an issue

There were a few downsides however to test printing... Namely that the characters are a little too large for scale with regular minis.

I guess they would be closer to 35 mm...
I guess they would be closer to 35 mm...

I will release these today, but long term I want to try re-scaling them in the future.

He might be a bit big, but he still looks very cool!

I have a 90% version of the captain that came out far more reasonably, and under 32 mm, which should be a decent compromise.

This test print, I scaled down the captain and chair to 90%, which is better in keeping with this 30ish mm mini.

Unfortunately, the other minis are a little harder, and would need reposing in addition to re-scaling since they outstretch their hands to reach control panels. This is something that I have tried to do, but Maya has repeatedly crashed, it would mean getting Anton involved again, which I may well do in the future.

This was one of the most unaltered conversions from the concept, and I am pretty happy with how it turned out.

The upper cockpit is fairly straight forward, and feels like a good balance between the upper deck, asymmetric an standard version

Additional detail was added to the bridge between the turret well and cockpit, but otherwise it was pretty straight forward. I actually quite like the silhouette of this version!

And wow! That is the very last of the ship variants!

In fact, the only thing outstanding is Turrets Pack III (Theo is just finishing up the probes) and the last of the variant minis, which I have decided I will most likely contract out to a third party so I can start designing new ships!

Oh but wait...

These are actually ready to release! I am test printing them now, but they are looking quite good. No renders yet, but soon. I will upload them for a proper release along with everything else.

The airlock turret well add on actually opens a lot like the missile tubes, and prints as one piece. The drones print as two, and can actually rotate their upper and lower sections.

Starship IV!

A lot of people are asking about this! In fact, in our last update we had an amazing 157 responses, more than three times the amount from our last survey after Starship II, and an amazing 25% of backers! We found out some very useful information that will inform the content of Starship IV

  • Deep Exploration, Military and Cargo hauler roles are the most popular for our multi-deck ship
  • Escape pods, docking equipment, cargo are the most popular features people want to see in our vertical ship
  • A galaxy far, far away is by far the most popular aesthetic, but that realistic designs are also extremely popular
  • People love complete ships - so that's what we will continue to do!
  • Small vehicles are something you guys really want to see!
  • Star Wars games are the most popular amongst our backers
  • Most backers play tabletop RPGs
  • Ship systems, mecha gantries and ways to move between decks are the most desirable interior parts

All in all, I got some amazing feedback, thanks guys!

When is it coming? Hopefully October! But of course, there will be previews before then!

Lots of Releases
almost 5 years ago – Fri, Jun 14, 2019 at 05:47:47 PM

I have been interviewing potential modellers to join the 2nd Dynasty crew this week, but this has not kept me from being quite productive.

I might have even started planning what's next in production... which brings me to this first:

Starship IV Survey

As I tend to do, here is a survey to help me figure out the next Kickstarter. What is obvious is that you guys want to see more ships. That is not in doubt. But the question is what's next. So, it will take around 5 minutes to fill out, so if you have time, you have a chance to influence the future vessels soon to be under construction.

Stretch Goal Updates

Turrets Pack II is done and printable! I have done quite a few test prints, at two basic sizes, so there is a little more variation than initially presented.

I rescaled some, but know that you want them all, so there are more than 11 variants in total now

The pack should be uploading over the weekend.

The interior parts for these are done, and just need to be packaged over the weekend.

This one took a good while and has quite a few components! But it was really fun!

Already released, you just need to download the latest version of the scout from DriveThru.

Of course, tested on the base model, but even here it looks good, and the launch hatches print as one piece!

Theo did a great job on this, and it has been test printed!

Mirrored version included.

A bit of a tight squeeze, but the base ship is the prototype - the production version should accommodate it perfectly

The missile room is already released with a new update to the transport engines, which were missing (interior). I haven't test printed yet, and might revisit them in the future, we shall see.

This is done, I just need to organise the files over the weekend.

This one was fun to do and I think it looks good. It should be compatible with most variants, but not the civilian upper deck or cargo variant.

I know some of you will want asymmetry and others symmetry, so options for both are included.

Outstanding Stretch Goals

  • Crew Miniatures (gonna be the second to last thing we do)
  • Turret Pack III (Theo is on it)
  • Transport Upper Cockpit Variant (next on my agenda)
  • Variant Miniatures II (the absolute last thing we will deliver)
  • Boarding Tube (I am on this after the transport)

Until next update!

Six New Variants!
almost 5 years ago – Mon, Jun 03, 2019 at 01:45:34 AM

So I've been busy after the completion of the first variant minis, and on Friday added another six variants to your pledge. Two each for the shuttle, transport and scout ship!

So let's check them out!

First up we have the Shuttle Turret Variant. She's not changed too much, except I moved the turret well forward a tad for better printing and to make it work with other models.

Should be compatible with all shuttle variants...
Should be compatible with all shuttle variants...

It is not compatible with the missile variant that came after it, but should be with pretty much everything else.

Of course, the unmanned turrets from Turrets Pack I and II might look even better, as will the civilian parts from Turrets Pack III

There is no underside detail at the moment, I wanted to save on floor space, as they would probably either have an auto turret or a retractable ladder.

Next up we have the civilian scout! A big project, this one took some time.

The civilian version went through several revisions...

There is a fair bit you can do with the finished product, allowing you to put in a cargo bay, state rooms, captain's quarters, or pretty much whatever tiles you like.

To arrive at this...

I am happy where it ended up. I have also left in some windows, so that those who print with multi-materials can reintegrate them.

You can opt for a cramped version like this, with access to the lower deck, cargo bay and upper turret, or something more spacious

Anyway, feedback so far has been great!

The saucer was a more ambitious project. This actually required more parts, but you can also accordion the central section to extend the ship if you don't respect aesthetics as much as me.

The saucer required a bit of engineering...

The upstairs cockpit is a bit cramped, with only room for two, although you could get creative and stick two seats facing sideways behind the ladder well.

Back to the shuttle, the missile variant was pretty straight forward. It comes in two parts, a ship section and an S tile for the interior.

The missile version adds a new top piece and a missile stack...

I like how they turned out and am looking forward to seeing prints!

Next up we have the big guns - this was fun to design, and based off of the patrol boat variant.

I hear some ACDC in my head when I see this thing...

She even looks good from behind

The large turret took some time, but did make things easier for the next project...

To me, this came out even better, with the large turret looking like it fits well despite its massive size.

Finally, it doesn't look too far amiss even on the transport
Finally, it doesn't look too far amiss even on the transport

I love these kind of barrels - let's say they are energy weapons or have serious inertial dampeners if you are a stickler for physics.

Coming Right Up!

I'm looking to hire now, I am looking for a second on-site modeller to help complete delivery. Getting someone to do the variant minis part II so I can start on Starship IV.

Lise-Lott is starting this week, and will return to documentation and getting our stuff up on MMF and elsewhere.

Tomorrow I start on Turrets II, the workshop is complete and incoming tomorrow, and I will be doing the rest of the ship variants before tackling the crew minis and variant minis!

That's enough eye candy for now - happy printing!

Finally Moving Again!
almost 5 years ago – Mon, May 20, 2019 at 10:44:39 PM

Sorry for the lack of updates lately everyone. I have had a lot of stuff going on at the moment, with the animation festival, administrative work and a sick dog that requires a little more TLC than usual. But aside from a small public holiday next week, things are clearing up finally.

Finally, finally, finally, the variant miniatures I pack is complete. It was my own fault that it took so long - my intention was originally to only really create the tactical minis, scaled to fit nicely on one inch hex stands.

But then, I thought it would be cool to do some 1:270 scale models for those who play games at that approximate scale.

In any case, now it is double the minis.

Move Along, Move Along...

And so it is that I finally have moved on...

The shuttle turret variant is done. I moved the turret forward half an inch, meaning that only one part now needs replacing. It will be in the next update. Of course, you can use any of the turrets in the turrets packs instead.

Outstanding Items

I think it is best now, rather than putting up a schedule, to list what is outstanding and the kind of time involved. I will try to get to them in this order.

  • Shuttle Turret Variant - Done! This will be in the next update.
  • Civilian Scout Variant - This is a big job, since it involves a second storey, but at the same time, at least there are no floors. I anticipate this one taking a few days.
  • Saucer Transport Variant - This will be a big job, since it is going to require quite a bit of redesign. I will add a cockpit on the top, similar to the upper cockpit variant.
  • Shuttle Missile Variant - This is less complex than some of the other jobs, I think it will take around a day tops.
  • Gunboat Scout Variant - This is a smaller job than it might seem, as most of the parts are from the patrol boat version. The time is going to be in converting the gun housing, and converting the larger turret.
  • Big Gun Transport - Same here, but in this case, the larger turret will already be modelled, so this should take half a day at most.
  • Turrets Pack II - This one is my responsibility and designs, but it should not take too long, a few days at most.
  • Workshop Bay - Theo is working on this as we speak.
  • Crew Miniatures - This one is going to take a long time. The models were made in zbrush, and are far from manifold. The conversion can be painstaking. I will probably leave this to second last.
  • Shuttle Mobile Home Variant - This is mostly interior pieces, which should not take more than a day in total to convert.
  • Missile Scout Variant - This is a larger mod, but thankfully, we have the groundwork from the stretch variant. I estimate two to three days work.
  • Missile Room - Theo is responsible for this one, and will probably get to it later this week.
  • Twin Engine Variant Shuttle - Only the new engines need converting, so this is probably only a day or less.
  • Turret Pack III - This is Theo's responsibility again, and will require some redesign of the probes in addition to the conversion. He might get to it by the end of the week, but it will take a while, so don't expect it for at least a fortnight.
  • Scout Side Airlock - This modification may take around a day to implement. I may combine it with the boarding tube to ensure that it fits.
  • Transport Upper Cockpit - The lessons learned from the upper deck should apply here. Two days.
  • Variant Miniatures II - I will save this to absolute last, since the conversions are tedious. Fortunately, it should go marginally faster next time.
  • Boarding Tube - In addition to my side airlock comments, this will need doing in both a full and a half variant.
  • Fixes - There are a variety of fixes to implement, but nothing that a few days won't solve.

As you can see, this is more tasks than can be fulfilled by the end of May, but I want to get through them as quickly as possible so that I can start planning the next campaign. I am hoping to run in October...

The Future

Although there is still a lot of tasks to do, I can now finally see the end of the tunnel, which means that the delivery phase will be over.

EXPANDING THE TEAM

I can now officially welcome Lise-Lott Eriksson to the team, she will start on the 3rd of January, and help to maintain and update our post Kickstarter catalogues, especially store items on Drivethru, MMF and Game Decor. She will also be working on the documentation for the scout ship and transport, to bring it in line with the shuttle.

I am also looking to get a new modeller, someone who can help me with tasks like post campaign conversions and deliveries to make this process quicker and smoother so  that I can keep designing new ships and elements. This process has only just started, but hopefully can be resolved quickly in time to help prepare for the next campaign.

STARSHIP IV

I have started turning my mind to inspiration for Starship IV. I think it is clear that the way to go are more ships. I have three vessels in mind already, but will be sending out some surveys in the near future to get a better idea of what you guys are looking for. The three main ideas:

  • A ship able to have two full, stackable decks
  • A vertical ship (think the Expanse), also stackable
  • Space station modules, similar in idea to the asymmetric transport

Things like design aesthetic influences, size, interior features and the like will hopefully be a collaborative process which I will be sharing more on in the future.

That's it for now!

More Delays, a Little Relief
almost 5 years ago – Wed, May 08, 2019 at 03:55:50 PM

It has been a struggle with the miniatures, and something I was hoping to get fully done by now in front of the festival, but being responsible for organising Trollywood Animation Festival has eaten into my time. I am also having some technical issues with my workstation, but at the end of the day, I have just simply run out of time this week.

I have uploaded what I have so far, wish I could have more for you. Monday I am back to a regular working week. I will post then with my game plan.
